Photo Opportunity: Boardriders unite for Surfing the Spectrum

In Attendance: Councillor Gail O’Neill, Palm Beach Boardriders President Murray Scott, Surfing the Spectrum coach and Burleigh Boardriders vice president Byron Hoskins, Poetry In Motion co-founder and Flotsam Festival representative Simon Saffigna, Burleigh Boardriders and Flotsam Festival team members.

 

What: Surf therapy group Surfing the Spectrum will be presented a cheque with proceeds of a photographic art piece auctioned during the Poetry In Motion event during Flotsam Festival.

 

Poetry In Motion celebrated two of the Gold Coast’s iconic surfers – Michael Peterson and Joel Parkinson – with a live score, archival footage and spoken word film event held at Southern Cross University campus theatre. During the event an auction of signed prints raised funds for Surfing the Spectrum and the junior development divisions of all six southern Gold Coast board riders clubs: D’Bah, Snapper, Kirra, Alley, Palm Beach and Burleigh. Surfing the Spectrum is a not-for-profit Surf Therapy initiative working to positively impact the lives of Autistic youth and their families providing free surf therapy events.

Flotsam Festival is a multi-site film and photography celebration inspired by surf culture. The third annual Flotsam Festival will run from Wednesday 1st May to Sunday 12th May, 2024. Flotsam Festival is presented by Flotsam Arts Inc., a not for profit association formed to create pivotal events that showcase the Gold Coast’s iconic surf culture through photo and film, and to create opportunities for photographic artists to extend their practice through mentorships, workshops and exhibition opportunities.
