FLOTSAM Festival returns to the Gold Coast for a third wave in 2024

Flotsam Festival, the Gold Coast's premier surf film and ocean photography celebration, proudly announces its return for the third consecutive year from May 1 to May 12, 2024.

Film submissions for the 2024 festival will open this Friday, Dec 1, 2023.

Building on the success of its previous editions, the festival promises an exhilarating line-up of events and activities that encapsulate the vibrant spirit of surf culture and artistic expression through ocean-inspired film and photographic arts.

Born out of a desire to showcase the region’s creative talent pool, the coastal-themed festival has become a hallmark Gold Coast event for both locals and visitors alike.

“The FLOTSAM Festival team are excited to once again welcome film submissions from local and international filmmakers. Divisions will span across short and feature-length content, with the primary entry requirement being that film subject matter fits the pre-requisite ocean-inspired theme,” said FLOTSAM Festival Director, Carolyn Emge.

"Having attracted some incredible talent across the festival’s ’22 and ’23 seasons, we’re anticipating an even larger cohort of high calibre submissions given the increased number of expanded festival categories for 2024."

Film submissions for the 2024 festival can be submitted to Film Freeway from 12pm Friday, with category details and guidelines available for prior viewing.

Since its inaugural pilot in 2022, Flotsam has grown into a beacon of artistic expression, showcasing the region's unique surf culture, world-class waves, and the abundant talent of its creative community.

The 2024 edition of Flotsam Festival will boast an extensive calendar of events staged as a multi-venue arts trail, and designed to captivate audiences of all interests.

Among the highlighted events set to make a return are Flotsam’s innovative outdoor photography exhibitions, curated film nights including Flotsam’s female creator showcase (Surf) Girls on Film, local film and photography competition awards night Homegrown, an International Surf Flick Fest, as well as new events including a youth film and photography initiative partnering visuals with live performances by up-and-coming musicians.

The festival will also feature dedicated amateur and youth programs, advanced photography workshops, and environmentally-conscious initiatives including a competition where debris and found items transform into art pieces captured through photography.
