Flotsam Festival returns this May, bringing a Cultural Wave of Creative Initiatives

Gold Coast, Australia
Wednesday 13 March, 2024

Flotsam Festival, the Gold Coast’s premier surf film and ocean photography celebration, is gearing up to deliver a dynamic cultural experience with a line-up of innovative events in the pipeline for this year’s program.

Flotsam Arts Inc is proud to announce that the 2024 program will be supported by the festival’s foundation partners, the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Experience Gold Coast, when the festival returns for a third consecutive year from May 1 to May 12, 2024.

Flotsam Festival 2024 will also expand free community programming and youth mentoring opportunities thanks to camera and projection equipment acquired as a recipient of funding support from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF). GCBF allocates grants to enhance their capacity, to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities for Queensland communities.

Flotsam’s two-week arts and culture festival showcases the Gold Coast’s rich surf heritage and world-class waves through photo and film, and was designed to foster and spotlight individual artists, creators and talent alike, amplify the flourishing arts and cultural industry, and serve as a place of community connection.

With an extensive calendar of events designed to captivate audiences of all interests, the 2024 edition will continue to offer a multi-venue arts trail that highlights the vibrant spirit of surf culture and artistic expression through ocean-inspired film and photographic arts.

Among the highlighted events set to make a return are Flotsam’s innovative outdoor photography exhibitions, curated film nights including Flotsam’s female creator showcase (Surf) Girls on Film, popular local film and photography competition awards night Homegrown, and an International Surf Flick Fest. New events set to be announced include a youth film and photography initiative partnering visuals with live performances by up-and-coming musicians.

The festival will also feature dedicated amateur and youth programs, photography workshops, environmentally-focussed community photography initiatives, as well as several new film and photography competitions.  The program for Flotsam Festival 2024 will be announced late March, 2024.

“With the welcome funding support of our foundation partners, Flotsam Festival 2024 will weave together surf culture and the arts into a visual tapestry of events across the Southern Gold Coast,” said FLOTSAM Festival Director, Carolyn Emge.

“This invaluable support will allow the festival to create a welcoming platform for international photographic artists, and shine a needed spotlight on our incredible local photographers, filmmakers and creators, providing a platform for their work to be seen, appreciated and supported. This furthers the festival’s goal to not only to showcase their work locally, but to foster their growth and success alongside a wealth of national and international participants.”

Over the last two years, Flotsam has attracted an influx of visitors through the allure of coastal culture and creativity on display.

“We’re excited to welcome the iconic Flotsam Festival back to the Gold Coast for its third year,” said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.

“The festival’s dynamic blend of film, photography and workshops not only showcases our famous coastal beauty – it fosters local creativity on an international stage. Congratulations to Experience Gold Coast for once again securing this unique event for the city.”

Born out of a desire to showcase the region’s creative talent pool, the coastal-themed festival has become a hallmark Gold Coast event for both locals and visitors alike.

Flotsam Festival’s successful pilot saw:

+ 27,000 visitors across 22 event sites
+ 82 filmmakers and photographers exhibited
+ 13 music performances
+ 52 accommodation providers and 34 restaurants, cafes and breweries spanning Currumbin to Coolangatta participated in festival ticketing programs
